Blurple Handbook v1.4

Welcome to the blurple handbook, which we have created in order to touch people who produce with passion like us, to address our passionate customers and to guide ourselves through the long nights we feel alone.

A PX Studio, so what?

blurple is a product experience (PX) studio, so what is product experience?

Product experience is a superset that includes user experience and focuses on all experience points that the product reflects to the user. The blurple team consists of product managers, analysts and product designers.

We only provide services on matters that fall within the PX cluster.

Services

  • User & Market Researches
  • Product Coaching
  • Product Design
  • Content Production
  • Product Check-Up (PX-RAY)

What is Blurple Universe?

We are a product experience studio, blurple is a studio consisting of product managers, user researchers and product designers, the most important values that form us are the values that form us in the background while providing our services to our clients.

The special meaning we assign to the colors blue and purple, which form the name of our blurple studio.

"blue: our principles, purple: our creativity”

The name of our logo-symbol, which is the combination of the principles we have come up with and our creativity, and our roof component that represents our community culture.

How can you work with blurple?

If you are interested in the services we provide in our studio, the way we do business and the quality of our output and would like to work with us, we would be pleased to meet you.

The journey to become a customer at blurple offers a clear process for both the client and studio staff, where we understand each other very well. At the end of this fast and effective process of getting to know each other and understanding the expectation, if both parties want to move forward, we move on to the bidding stage.

1. Meeting

If you are thinking of getting to know us better and getting an offer from us, we would be pleased to meet you and introduce ourselves.

We wish to be matched in the demand-solution projection within the meeting to meet you, understand your request and meet your request by scheduling a meeting.

2. Discovering

With the experience we have gained so far, perhaps the most important thing we have understood and the first thing we have accomplished is to clearly understand the project process in all its lines at the beginning of the process and to create the roadmap, for this we work with you in efficient times and to understand you with all the details in order to minimize the risk of cumulative time loss of the parties. We work, the team leader manages this process and communicates directly with our potential customer.

Every professional structure that skips the analysis phase at the beginning of the project process or does not show the necessary effort is fighting serious problems that waste more time and effort in the project process, the most important step for us is to start the process with the right analysis from a preventive point of view.

3. Creating a Roadmap

We create a road map in which we set the appropriate environment for the project to be created in a safe area, with efficiency and by targeting the right output quality, where we determine the team system, project duration and process, development stages that we recommend for your project, your request.

4. Proposal

As soon as it is formed with the planning details and only the submission and approval stage of the proposal is left for the project start, we plan to propose through the meeting and our team leader presents the process to the customer.

5. Contract

As soon as there is an agreement after the proposal, our legal team prepares a contract that includes the entire scope of the project and shares it with our client, and we set up the infrastructure and environment required for the project during the signing process.

6. Kick-off 🚀

Maybe we start a journey where we aim to present the project development process with the right experience while creating the experience for the end user.

The way we work at Blurple

"Those who combine creativity with data and always think about the end user”

We are constantly trying to improve our value standards that we set with our way of doing business, our values, our team communication and our communication style with our customers throughout the journey.

“We know that the way we do business directly affects the quality of life of every blurple person, the quality of value created at the end of the day, the quality of experience we offer to our customers and our customers, and our future in every sense.”

The experience experts, product managers and analysts who make up blurple offer a vision that is a combination of blurple people, principles and creativity.

Decision-Making Power Belongs to Experts

blurple is a studio focused on consultancy and experience production, our team, consisting only of experts in the field, does not have to get approval from the managers outside the subject to make decisions, and therefore both stop personal development and waste time. Our team has the authority to make decisions about the project it carries out, because all team members are already experts in the subject.

Guiding and Mentoring

Our entire goal is to create value in the projects we are involved in and as a result of the services we provide, while at the same time being able to guide and mentor our stakeholders, tell what we know and learn what we do not know.

This is true within the team as well, the concept of mentoring we want to explain is to create a culture in which we constantly learn from each other and nurture each other, both within the stakeholders and within the team.

Our Curiosity for Details

"Small details make up the big picture"

At blurple, we aim to progress step by step by focusing on the details, without experiencing the stress of raising the processes that we have already planned from the beginning to the end of the working day and re-planning while in the process, improving the details and finally making a difference in the big picture. We know that small works and details are very important for the right pieces to come together in the big picture.

We, those who are curious, those who do the work we are curious about, those who are fed with new curiosities every day, those who are passionately in love with the beauty of the details as a result of our enthusiastic research, will continue to wonder.

Making Time for New Ideas

A new idea can come unexpectedly and open a new page, we have a weakness for new ideas from blurple, we have created a team that produces new ideas every day for our stakeholders who apply to us to create innovation and make it a reflex.

After the word "I have an idea" on blurple, all eyes will turn to you, we will continue to listen, understand and interpret, understanding new ideas, interpreting and giving feedback, one of the main factors that make up our community.

Self Tracking and Transparency

We are a team that has the competence and individual will to create our own ideas, working reflex and follow-up mechanism, not to be followed and managed.

The dependence of people on being managed is our nightmare, everyone knows their own duty on a common management mechanism in blurple, follows their own duty and shares it transparently, we continue to develop our business management scheme with our common will.

Respect for Thought / Freedom of Opinion

We are deeply committed to respecting the shared idea and supporting freedom of opinion as much as our enthusiasm for a new idea within the team or towards our stakeholders.

We know that even if we don't like an idea for minds based on creativity like us, or even if we don't share the same feeling, every idea is very valuable for the development of our community and our world and takes us one step further, opens a new page and changes our way of thinking. With our way of thinking based on evaluation and questioning, we can listen and discuss with each other respectfully.

Project Management

We prefer to adhere to informative, directive, transparent, and collaborative working principles with our clients in project management.

We embrace similar principles in the design and consultancy services we provide, managing all projects with pre-planned workflows tailored to the type of service, using project flowcharts (the flowchart may vary depending on the project scope).

  • We utilize the Monday application for project management, planning the project management flow from initiation to completion at the outset of each project and manage the project with transparency by involving our clients in Monday.

"We base our methodologies on global standards adopted from reputable institutions, but interpret and tailor them according to our own needs for all our projects."

Teams Communication

In our internal communication and communication with our clients, we utilize three types of communication methods:

  • Email Communication
  • Instant Messaging via Discord
  • Phone Calls

After trying various communication methods to maximize our productivity and maintain focus within our dedicated working system, we have selected and classified the most efficient ones for both ourselves and our clients.

For formal correspondence and important notifications: Email

For official correspondence and important notifications, we rely on Email. We maintain communication via email for all essential processes where we have a legal obligation, such as during any project agreement stage, quoting stage, or throughout the project lifecycle, including official project deliveries.

For rapid communication within the project: Discord

Within our team, we utilize special Discord channels created for internal communication. Similarly, for each project we initiate, we establish Discord channels for communication with our clients. These channels are structured as follows:

  • A client-blurple Discord channel for rapid communication with our clients.
  • A Discord channel involving our client for shared file, data, and resource exchange.
  • A Discord channel involving our client for conducting voice and video meetings.
  • A Discord channel for internal communication within the blurple team regarding the project.

In case of unavailability or urgent communication: Phone.

In situations where we do not receive a response from our clients via Discord or email, we resort to communication via phone. However, phone communication is not our primary method initially, as we are a user experience design and consultancy studio. We prioritize more planned communication methods where we can convey more information in one go and strive to maintain focus and efficiency at maximum levels. Therefore, we adopt other communication methods as our primary means of communication.

Storage

Upon initiating each project, we archive all project outputs within a Google Drive folder dedicated to the project for a period of one year. We utilize Google services as our storage tool and share each client file we store online with our clients (granting access). However, after sharing, we do not assume responsibility for any work files that may have been accessed by third parties. For information regarding Google's privacy and data processing policies, you can refer to here.

Working Hours / Timing System

The working hours of Blurple Studio are weekdays (Monday-Friday) from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Our team operates on a remote work system, allowing members to work from anywhere in the world. In cases where there are time differences among team members, we dynamically utilize asynchronous task assignment methods to avoid inefficiencies.

  • We aim to respond to our clients within an average of 30 minutes during our designated working hours through any communication channel we have established. Additionally, we strive to address our clients' questions and requests within a maximum of 6 hours during our working hours.

Research Outputs

We utilize Figjam and Miro for any research study outputs. To provide access to our clients, we invite them to these applications online.

As a team actively using Figma for design, we frequently use Figjam for presenting and delivering research and analysis documents such as persona studies and benchmark analyses.

You can explore Figjam in detail by clicking here

Design Process / Principles

Since its establishment, Blurple has been using Figma for all user experience and interface design processes.

Additionally, as a studio, we are one of the early adopter studios providing feedback for new features in Figma. We utilize Figma for all UX and UI design processes, including fundamental files such as presentation documents created within the studio

In our Product Design [UX-UI] Services, our method for creating files and projects in Figma is as follows:

Our Team's (Not Shared with the Client) Project Files
  • XX Project UX Design File

In this file, we conduct either low-fidelity or high-fidelity wireframe work depending on the scope of the product.

  • XX Project Interface Work File

In this file, we proceed with the UI work referencing the completed output of the wireframe UX process.

Our first task in the interface work file is to create a design system, embedding this design system into Figma to facilitate clarity and ease for both design and development processes. Within this file, before starting the UI of the product, we position the following items as pages:

Our Figma Pagination System
  1. Design Principle Page: A document explaining the design principles established for the project.
  2. Design Output Pages: A folder where UI outputs will be generated page by page.
  3. Pages within the Design Outputs folder:
    - Colors Page
    - Typography Page
    - Grid & Spacing Page
    - Iconography Page
    - Alerts Page (as a component)
    - Avatars Page (if applicable, as a component)
    - Buttons Page (as a component)
    - Dropdown/Select Page (as a component)
    - Input Fields Page (as a component)
    - Modal Page (as a component)
    - Progress Bar Page (as a component)
    - Tab Page (as a component)
    - Tool Tip Page (if applicable, as a component)
  • XX Project Design File (Hand-off)

In the Interface Work File, we publish the finalized project outputs within Figma. By utilizing the publishing system, the internal design output file we own remains constantly updated, and the hand-off file we deliver to the client stays current as well. Within this file, we share both the finalized design outputs with our client and position the design system as follows:

Instead of delivering the design system as an additional file (typically as a separate foundation file), we embed it within the project output file. This decision is made because of Figma's component capabilities, enabling both design and development teams to access and swiftly update both the design system and project output from a single file.

Within the hand-off file, the following items are included:

1. Design Principle File: Document explaining the design principles established for the project.
2. Design Outputs: Folder containing UI outputs generated page by page.

3. Design System Pages

  - Typography Page

   - Colors Page
  - Grid & Spacing Page
  - Iconography Page
  - Alerts Page (as a component)
  - Avatars Page (if applicable, as a component)
  - Buttons Page (as a component)
  - Dropdown/Select Page (as a component)
  - Input Fields Page (as a component)
  - Modal Page (as a component)
  - Progress Bar Page (as a component)
  - Tab Page (as a component)
  - Tool Tip Page (if applicable, as a component)

How we create documentation?

Design files are sometimes transitioned directly into the development phase depending on the project's status, while at other times they may remain dormant for a period. In either scenario, the task of documenting useful design output remains the responsibility of designers. We ensure that this is done in a manner that can be understood by anyone and at any time when reviewing the design output.

Sticky Note Based Documentation Example

For each design screen, we place sticky notes obtained from FigJam alongside, explaining the purpose of that page and how actions can be taken on that page/screen in a way that is easily comprehensible. In complex pages, we may use several sticky notes, or for highly intricate projects, we transfer the entire design file to FigJam and provide detailed explanations by connecting screens with arrows to the sticky notes.

Basic Principles

  • We don't start a project without a design system.
  • We don't commence design work without research outputs or sufficient data.
  • All our design work is carried out in Figma.
  • We predominantly use auto-layout in all our design work.
  • We utilize a component structure for every necessary/appropriate element in all our design work.

Design Methodology

Our design methodology is our basic design methodology that we guide in a product design process.

The biggest feature of this methodology is to start testing the product while it is still in the wireframe stage and to start solving problems before the product even starts the design stage by using time efficiently.

After submitting the product printout, it is our concern that the product we created is presented to the user with the correct printout, we continue to follow and give feedback.

Strategic Consultancy Methodology

The strategic methodology is our basic strategy methodology that we guide when starting a product consultancy or a market and user research process.

The biggest difference of this methodology is that it provides the impetus for continuous self-monitoring and transformation in the process.

Feedback Process

We are passionate about feedback and regularly seek it from our clients and stakeholders to continually improve ourselves. We are aware of the constructive impact of feedback.

  • If you would like to provide feedback about our studio in general, you can contact us "here." In all our projects, either at the final stage or continuously throughout, we send feedback forms to our clients via Clutch.co every six months.
  • Through these feedback forms, facilitated by the trusted third-party Clutch, a Clutch representative reaches out to our clients to gather detailed feedback, evaluation notes, and ratings. As a result, each year, we earn rankings in the product experience design and market research leagues in Turkey and Spain. In 2022 and 2023, based on customer evaluations in product experience design, we were honored with the Top Studio badge in both countries and categories by Clutch.co.

Additional Efforts

In the scope of work agreed upon with our clients, for any items that fall outside the scope and are requested during the project duration, i.e., items not included in the agreed scope, we engage in additional effort billing based on person/day effort logic. We evaluate any requests for extra effort from our clients due to items not within the scope, determine the additional effort required in person/day units, and plan the extra effort work after obtaining approval from our clients.

  • We strive to avoid additional effort wherever possible. Unlike the typical agency approach, we aim to avoid taking additional effort and meticulously define the entire scope upfront before commencing the project. This approach is crucial because any additional efforts can lead to changes in project planning. As we operate with a dedicated system not only in client projects but also in our internal structure, any extra effort requires us to update the entire workflow/planning. Additionally, we are aware that any additional efforts are billed at a rate higher than the unit price initially agreed upon for the project, which could potentially cause dissatisfaction among our clients. Therefore, we endeavor to avoid any actions that may lead to client dissatisfaction.

Nevertheless, considering that additional efforts may arise in the course of workflow, we transparently outline how we manage this extra effort process.
